Aird & Berlis Welcomes New Partners Stephen Leonard, Sabrina Spencer and Demetre Vasilounis
We are pleased to welcome Stephen Leonard, Sabrina Spencer and Demetre Vasilounis as new partners of the firm. Stephen is a member of our Intellectual Property Group, Sabrina is a member of our Indigenous Practice Group and Demetre is a member of our Tax and Estates & Trusts Groups.
Stephen is a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States. With a PhD in physics, Stephen brings a natural curiosity to his patent practice and enjoys the challenge of protecting complex inventions that span multiple technical disciplines.
Stephen advises startups, academic institutions and teaching hospitals on patent protection and development. His entrepreneurial experience in startups and technology commercialization gives him an insightful approach to intellectual property, allowing him to help clients build valuable patent portfolios in medtech, deep tech, AI, optics, computer vision, robotics, telecom and fintech.
Sabrina practises Aboriginal and environmental law, striving to foster change and progress through innovative legal approaches.
Sabrina works closely with Indigenous communities and companies to advance reconciliation and sustainability, including through negotiations between Indigenous communities and project proponents, particularly in relation to natural resource and energy projects. She works with Indigenous clients to develop governance and legal structures related to environmental and natural resource issues. Sabrina’s work in Indigenous relations includes advising both commercial and local government clients on strategies to foster positive relationships with Indigenous communities.
Demetre is a thoughtful and detail-oriented lawyer who specializes in trusts, estates and tax law.
Demetre has a broad trusts and estates practice, working with clients to create and execute wills, powers of attorney and various trust instruments. He develops customized tax planning strategies for his clients and regularly engages with their private holding and operating corporations when managing corporate reorganizations and estate freezes. Demetre's expertise spans a wide range of family wealth planning matters, including tax issues, cross-border and international estates, probate planning and disability planning.
