Kimberly Murray (she/her), BA, LLB, LLM, IPC, LLD (h.c.) - Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools

Aird & Berlis and Aird & McBurney are grateful to have the esteemed Kimberly Murray, Office of the Independent Special Interlocutor (OSI) for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools, present during this special webinar in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Program Overview:

Ms. Murray will present on the OSI’s mandate, which was formed in 2022 with close collaboration between First Nations, Inuit and Métis governments, and which will result in recommendations to the federal government for establishing a legal framework addressing the respectful and culturally appropriate treatment of unmarked graves and burial sites of children at former Indian Residential Schools and associated institutions.

Our program will also include details of the OSI’s Sites of Truth, Sites of Conscience report—a 256-page document published in 2024 which builds on the findings of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The OSI report has numerous functions, including making public historical material that illustrates the ways State officials anticipated and planned for deaths at Indian Residential Schools. In addition, the report presents extensive research findings regarding the experiences of a number of child victims as a means to archive truth and reframe this history through an anti-colonial lens.

Join us in support of bringing truth to future generations by learning more about the ongoing work being done by the OSI in reconciling the history and destructive legacy of Residential Schools on Indigenous families, cultures, communities, and languages.
