GE Ventures is Coming to Canada

Posted in News

GE Ventures, an investment vehicle of General Electric, is entering the Canadian marketplace. Part private equity firm, part licensor of General Electric's own technologies, GE Ventures has begun searching the Canadian startup space for emerging companies that could benefit from underutilized GE intellectual property and which have the potential to provide General Electric with solid returns on investment.

Speaking with the Financial Post at MaRS Discovery District last month, Sue Siegel, the CEO of GE Ventures, identified some of the company's goals in Canada, which, for now primarily, involve testing the Canadian startup ecosystem to see how sustainable long-term investment in Canadian startups could be. GE Ventures appears to know what it's doing, as the company has invested $375 million in early stage companies through incubators and venture capital partners, since 2013, and boasts a presence in "eight different parts of the world."

Having such a significant player enter the Canadian startup space could lead to valuable capital-raising opportunities for Canadian entrepreneurs - a lack of which is often cited as the principle reason so many Canadian startups are forced to look south when seeking investors. GE Ventures claims it partners with startups to help commercialize ideas in a range of industries, including software & analytics, healthcare, energy and advanced manufacturing.
